Understanding MES — Start Here
📦 What is MES?
Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures. Tracks the S&P 500 index
at $5 per point. If ES moves 10 points, you make or lose $50 per MES contract.
It is the beginner-friendly version of the full ES contract which moves $50/point.
⏰ When Can You Trade?
MES trades 23 hours/day, Sunday 6pm ET to Friday 5pm ET.
For Singapore/Malaysia traders, the prime window is 9pm–2am SGT when both Asian
session and early US overnight session overlap with the most volume.
💰 How Much Do You Need?
IBKR requires approximately $1,500 margin per MES contract.
Prof Dr Tan's recommended starting size: 1 contract with $10,000 in your account.
Risk per trade: maximum $50-100 (10-20 ES points stop loss).
📈 The Basic Strategy
During Asian session, ES usually follows the direction set
by Asian markets (Nikkei, Hang Seng). If Nikkei is up 1%+ and VIX is below 20,
buy 1 MES at Asia open, target 10-15 points, stop at 8 points. Simple and mechanical.
🛡️ Risk Management
Never risk more than 1% of account per trade.
With $50,000, that is $500 maximum risk = 100 ES points = never acceptable.
Proper risk: $150 per trade = 30 ES points stop = 6 MES contracts maximum.
